Contemporary Portuguese Architecture – Spiral Staircase for 6,000 Books

This contemporary Portuguese architecture will have your head spinning! Architect Manuel Maia Gomes designed this spiral staircase home dubbed House Antero de Quental, with its sculptural central feature making its way upward and the rest of the house winding around it in perfect harmony. The minimalist interiors highlight this twisting architectural feature without detracting from its grandeur. Warm wood details and an exposed timber ceiling create a focal point overhead – a smart design feature, as the layout leads residents and guests ever-upward through a two-storey tower. Lining the staircase, spiraling shelves are backlit through translucent plexiglass and accommodate 6,000 books. You could call this design “poetic architecture” – originally the home of a 19th-century poet, the building was redesigned as a literary centre that pays homage to architecture and the written word alike.
